58. 2010 Main St U.S.A

2010 “Main St U.S.A. ”

Summer 2010 – My husband and I traveled through the Midwest and noticed that Main Street in the towns we visited was Foreclosed, For Sale or For Rent. Thrift and Dollar Stores were open for business along with Wallmart and Check Cashing outlets.  On the highway we saw generic shopping centers offering imported items. We had similar experiences traveling to major US cities where slightly more upscale brand name stores were common, but they were the same in every major city and filed with items that were not made in America. We both remember when cities had unique shopping districts reflecting local creativity.

2010 – 1,593,081 people and business file Bankruptcy in the U.S.A.

2010 – Unemployment reaches 14,825,000.

2010 – 52 million American adults (28% of working-age adults) found themselves uninsured at some point during 2010.

60. 2010 Public Debt2010 “Public Debt ”

Shock and Awe images in the news media and advertising, of war, fear, consumerism and patriotism have played with our emotions.

2010 – Bush told us originally that his Tax Cuts were going to help the economy but in their first 10 years, those cuts meant the largest transfer of wealth to already rich Americans. America paid more than $400 Billion U.S.D. in new interest while $2.6 Trillion U.S.D. was added to our public debt.

2010 – Hall of Corporate Shame: Twenty nine Major Corporations Paid No Federal Taxes between 2008-2010. These companies did manage to pay $400,000. per day to lobby lawmakers and influence political elections. Companies included General Electric, Wells Fargo, Boeing. Verizon Communications, Mattel, Pepco Holdings. Baxter International, Intel Corporation.

2010 According to data from the US Department of Defense (DoD), there are around 112,000 contractors employed by the US military currently working in Afghanistan and 95,000 contractors employed by the US working in Iraq. 28,343 are private security contractors (PSCs) protecting personnel, convoys and bases.

No Draft meant: US taxpayers will pay for hiring mercenaries.

2010 – Operation Iraqi Freedom ends. New name for Iraq war is: “Operation New Dawn”.

2010 – The Federal Reserve released a study that said “The average American family’s net worth dropped almost 40% between 2007 and 2010, wiping out 18 years of savings.”

2010 – According to a government report, interest costs on the National Debt plus escalating Social Security and Medicare spending, will absorb 92% of the federal revenue by the year 2019.
