Day 14 (20 day story) year 2012 Part 2.
Year – 2012 / Underlying Structures
Year – 2012 / “ Prison”
2012 – “2.4 Million People Behind Bars”: More than 1 in 100 adults in the United States were in prison or jail, plus 5 million more were being monitored through probation or parole.
04/22/2012 – CBS NEWS: U.S.A. has close to 5% of the world’s population and holds 25% of the world’s prisoners. Ironically, our Land of the Free has the highest incarceration rate of its citizens than any other county on earth, including the most repressive dictatorships.
Statistics show that more than 50% of prisoners once released will be back behind bars within 3 years.
Year – 2012 / “ Prison Habitation”
The cost of incarcerating one inmate averages between $30,000 and $60,000 per year, the equivalent to a teacher or firefighter’s salary. Our epidemic of incarceration costs US taxpayers $63 billion dollars a year.
QUESTION: If crime rate is down more than 40% over the last 20 years, WHY do we have more prisoners in jail?
NOTE: Forty two (42) years ago our political system declared the “War on Drugs.”
Forty five (45) MILLION arrests have been made costing over $2.5 trillion dollars and causing collateral damage to society.
Non-violent offenders make up over 60 percent of the prison and jail population.
Nonviolent drug offenders now account for about one-fourth of all offenders
“ Borders ” Why are our borders being walled off?
“Borders” Republicans have said repeatedly they would not support a comprehensive immigration bill unless it stopped foreigners from illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.
“Borders” Are we being shut in or shut out?
